But because you live in a place, immerse yourself in that place, and breath= e and live it daily, you sometimes forget. I've met Parisians who have neve= r been to the Eifel Tower. The theory being that you c= an visit them anytime you want. But the thing is, you don't. I didn't want to be that guy, and I make a point of getting out and explori= ng the jungles on my new home island of Penang, Malaysia a few times a week= ; George Town, Penang's historic capital, almost daily; and my favorite clu= b, beach, and bar at least once every few weeks. Penang's capital George Town is filled with historic buildings. I have an old Vespa scooter and I use it daily. And when I pass Indian temp= les with their music blaring, Chinese food street stalls crowed with Malays= , Chinese, and Indians, and old colonial buildings filled with character an= d charm, I'm constantly reminded of where I am. George Town has temples to a wide range of religions. When we moved to Penang back in early 2010 we knew that we had to meet peop= le in order to stay. Wherever you move to its important that you realize th= at it's all about the friends, so we immediately joined the Penang Swimming= Club in order to make friends and meet locals. Established in 1903 as a club for the gentlemen of the colony, it now has 7= ,000 members, and all the amenities that you would expect from a 5-star fac= ility. Its sailing section, where members can take out the club's sailing b= oats and speedboats, was an immediate draw for me. I also love its Olympic = outdoor saltwater pool, its subsidized restaurants where 10 people can have= a 15-course Chinese meal for $10 per person, and its bars where a gin and = tonic costs just $1.50. Keith's favorite beach offers him undisturbed peace. Right next to the club is my favorite beach (it doesn't have a name). I swi= m here, snooze here, read my book here, and it's my go-to place to wind dow= n when all I want to feel is warm sand between my toes.
